Mission. IFIRI will provide the best education, training and research for the investigation and testing community and will offer meaningful certifications requiring structured teaching and high standards of conduct and objectivity.

To accomplish these goals IFIRI will teach members how to perform objective investigations, testing and research. Objectivity will be taught and the importance of first wanting to be objective will be emphasized.

All members of IFIRI shall comply with the Code of Ethics which is as follows:

  • I will approach every fire scene and test with an objective mind. I will recuse myself from any investigation where I have a conflict of interest or have emotional interest in the outcome.
  • Not only will I make a concerted effort to remain objective during the investigation but I will avoid actions or appearances that may adversely influence the objectivity of others.
  • Since lives and liberties may be at stake, I will avoid alliances with those whose goals and investigative methods are inconsistent with an honest and unbiased investigation.
  • I will not be an adversary or an advocate but will pursue truth and justice. My work is to discover and provide facts, not to protect the fiduciary benefit of potential interested parties.
  • I will not violate any laws, federal (national), state (provincial or county), or local, during an investigation and will hold myself to the highest professional standards. I will work at developing my skills and will strive to be better today than I was yesterday.
  • I am a steward of my profession, and as such I will make it my duty to maintain competency and currency. I will learn the proper terminology of my trade recognizing that accuracy lies in details. For example, it is not spontaneous combustion but spontaneous ignition.
  • It is more important to protect the innocent than to convict the guilty. Accordingly, I will be a truth-seeker, not a case-maker.
  • IFIRI does not recommend that any forensic experts go against their employers’ policies or procedures, however, paying or rewarding informants is not a practice of which we approve.
