It is getting harder and harder to keep ones opinion in play. Even some of the big names and been set on the sidelines in the last few years.

Totally agree with that sentiment. With the article by T.D. raising the issues that are before us it is more and more evident that we, as fire investigators, need to maintain our skills and maintain our training and education to keep up to date with current trends, testing results and technology.
NFPA 1033 article 1.3.7 covers it pretty well and places the onus on us to keep up with current trends and advances in technology by maintaining our skills and knowledge and becoming members of recognised technical organisations, attending seminars and workshops and reading journals and magazines that can keep us abreast of all of these developments.
To maintain your credibility, stay educated and informed.
